Seven cases involving police officers found out in the last 2 months. The Minister of Citizen Protection, Yiannis Oikonomou, speaks of “zero tolerance for delinquency and corruption within the Greek Police”.
Specifically, the Ministry of Citizen Protectionin his statement, states that “the government has as its statutory principles the institutionality and adherence to legality, let alone what concerns public Authorities. The recent investigations of cases, in which officers of the Greek Police are involved, demonstrate the unwavering commitment of the government in general and the Ministry of Citizen Protection in particular to the eradication of delinquency and corruption within ELAS. There is no minimum tolerance for anyone who, by act or reason, tries to breach the trust of both the citizen and the society in the Authorities of our State”.
In this context, in the last two months, following coordinated and organized actions by the competent services, primarily the Internal Affairs Service of the Ministry of Citizen Protection, a total of seven cases involving police officers have been solved. Those involved have already been referred to Greek Justice.
Indicatively, the investigations revealed that the police officers in question were found to be involved in cases of extortion and bribery, participation in criminal organizations, drug trafficking, arson, as well as the provision of private security services.
The Minister of Citizen Protection, Yannis Oikonomou, stated: “The Greek Police, with its multifaceted and effective action, with self-sacrifice and a high sense of duty and responsibility, consolidates order and security in every corner of our Motherland. It is our commitment and priority to improve the everyday life of the citizen and to deal radically with the phenomena of violence and delinquency. However, as in any “living organism”, so also in the Body of the Hellenic Republic, sometimes delinquent behaviors are observed, which need radical treatment. The recent incidents investigated by the Internal Affairs Service, in which police officers are involved, demonstrate our dedication to dealing with such phenomena and our unwavering belief in the values ​​and principles embodied by both the Greek State and the Greek Police. With determination, with a commitment to legality and integrity, we will not let anything and anyone disrupt the operation of ELAS and the citizens’ trust in it”.
