The situation in the Middle East was mentioned by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during his visit to Evros, in view of the second round of the self-governing elections. Mr. Mitsotakis pointed out that Israel has the right to initiate its self-defense, but Greece is not complacent, since any crisis can be a reason for more immigration flows. “I convey to you again in uncritical Evros my non-negotiable will not to take a single step back from the policy of strictly guarding the borders by whatever means are necessary,” he said characteristically.

In particular, Mr. Mitsotakis said:

“We stand by Israel. And of course Israel has the possibility and the right to initiate its self-defense always with respect to International Law so that these people do not extend the destruction to other civilians,” said the prime minister and continued: ” We, however, are not complacent. We know very well that any crisis can be an occasion for more migration flows. And for this reason, I convey to you once again to the uncritical Evros my non-negotiable will not to take a single step back from the policy of strictly guarding the borders with whatever means are needed. Whether it is the fence, or new means of electronic surveillance, or the human resources that I know 24 hours a day 24 hours 365 days a year in difficult very often conditions protect our borders. This policy of active deterrence and border guarding for which I want to tell you that we have convinced the European Union that it is the appropriate policy and that no European refugee/immigrant policy can ultimately have content if it is not based on substantial and effective guarding of the external borders of the European Union”.
