SYRIZA-PS expresses its deepest concern “about the cycle of violence with thousands of deaths in which Israel and Palestine are immersed, the intensifying humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the possible extension of the conflict at the regional level and the possibility of a new refugee crisis”.

He notes in a statement that “the absolutely condemnable attack by Hamas does not legitimize the counterattack launched by Israel in the previous days, which costs the lives of thousands of Palestinian civilians and exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in Gaza through the blockade of the area.” “Climax, yesterday’s bombing of a hospital in Gaza with hundreds of dead which – according to media reports – was carried out by the Israeli Air Force”, reports SYRIZA and emphasizes that “violence against civilians is in no way tolerated by international law and the elementary sense of justice, while the logic of ‘revenge’ will only further escalate the tension and cause greater losses”.

He adds that “already the three decades that have passed since the signing of the Oslo Accords and the policy of settlements, occupation and blockade imposed by the Israeli authorities, prove that the violation of international law and the encroachment on basic rights of the Palestinians in the Strip of Gaza, only breed violence and undermine the peace and security of Israelis and Palestinians in the region.”

SYRIZA underlines that it considers the urgent need for international diplomatic initiatives for an immediate ceasefire, the release of the abductees and the return to the diplomatic path, with the aim of a solution of two viable states that coexist peacefully, based on the 1967 borders with the capital of the Palestinian State of East Jerusalem. “In this context”, he continues, “both the decision of the US to veto a relevant decision of the UN Security Council and the awkward, reluctant attitude of the EU are extremely problematic.”

The official opposition party calls on the Greek government “to support every initiative in this direction and to offer help to victims, refugees and injured, Palestinians and Israelis”. “We support and will actively support the struggle for peace and a just and sustainable solution for the Palestinian issue, against the Israeli occupation and any political force that uses violence against civilians to achieve its goals,” notes SYRIZA.
