The cooperation between the Allies to address the challenges in matters of international order, as well as the deep commitment to safeguarding Democracy, democratic ethos and principles, as well as freedom, was proposed by AAmerican ambassador Giorgos Tsounis speaking at the Athens Security Forum organized by the Institute of International Relations of Pantheon University.

In light of this, the American ambassador wanted to send the message that Greece is the most important US ally in the region and that it is a pillar of stability in a region that has many sources of instability, in the Balkans, in the Middle East. “You need important, capable and reliable allies. Who do you go to in this region if you need an ally to ensure peace in the region? It is Greece. She is the only one who has the ability and the morals to do so. Greece is an important ally and has proven it many times. It will be the solution for many things. It is emerging as an energy supplier in Southeast Europe. It is also in the top ten countries in Renewable Energy Sources,” he said. Emphasizing the energy role of Greece, he emphasized that it is making investments to become the main provider in Southeast Europe.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of obtaining investment grade from Greece.

At the same time, he highlighted the international role of the US, saying that it is important in terms of cooperation with NATO and the EU, but also with regard to Gaza, cooperation and alliances with countries in the Middle East, some of which play an important role in the liberation of the hostages.

Referring in particular to the Middle East, he said that what is happening is unimaginable and expressed the hope that diplomacy will do its job. He added that the action of October 7 was inhumane and noted that the US is constantly trying to help free the hostages from Hamas. This is a top priority, he added.

Continuing on the same wavelength, he emphasized that we must start the process to ensure peace so that Israelis and Palestinians can live as they deserve, with security, dignity and peace. In fact, he underlined the need to ensure that there are no collateral losses and stated that he was proud of Greece’s response.

Reflecting on the international security system, the US ambassador to Greece spoke of existential threats in matters of an international order that we have not had in the last 50 years.

Furthermore, Giorgos Tsounis referred to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he said that it is unthinkable in 2023 to change the borders by force, stressing that every authoritarian regime in the world is watching and says that if Putin succeeds, if the West gets tired, they will the message is sent that this is allowed and that they can do it too. We must continue to stand by Ukraine, he emphasized. In this context, he congratulated Greece for its stance on Ukraine and is a diaper on the right side of history.
