Citizens divided on same-sex marriage, more negative on legal recognition of their children – ‘Yes’ tilts on establishment of non-state universities – Fan violence part of wider phenomenon, major Pulse poll says for mainstream newscast of Skye
Public opinion appears divided in regards to them two major reforms which the government has put on the public stage, namely the establishment of non-state universities and the marriage of same-sex couples. At the same time, in the big issue that once again dominates the news and concerns fan violence, 8 out of 10 citizens believe that it is part of a wider social issue of violence.
Non-state universities
According to the major Pulse poll presented on Sky’s main newscast with Sia Kosionis, to the question “how do you deal with the functioning of non-state higher institutions” 47% answered definitely/probably positively, while 40% answered definitely/probably negatively. The fact that the tide is leaning towards allowing their operation is seen more clearly in the question “operation of non-state higher institutions: Which position do you agree with the most?”, where 30% answer “I would like it not to be allowed”, while 26 % say they would prefer it to be allowed and 28% that “I don’t have a problem if it is allowed”. 5% of respondents said they were indifferent to the issue, while 11% said they did not know or did not answer.
Same-sex civil marriage- Legal recognition of children of same-sex couples
However, citizens are divided “in two” when it comes to the issue of the civil marriage of same-sex couples. According to the Pulse poll, 46% say they have a somewhat/definitely negative view of civil marriage, while 45% say definitely/somewhat positively.
However, to the question “civil marriage of same-sex couples: which position do you most agree with?” the scale is tilted towards “yes”, since 52% answer “I would like it to be allowed” (20%) or “I have no problem if it is allowed” (32%). 33% say they would like it not to be allowed, while one in ten say they don’t care what happens.
However, the picture changes when it comes to children of same-sex couples, with 56% of respondents answering the question “how do you feel about the legal recognition of children raised by same-sex couples?” . 36% answer the same question definitely/probably positively.
When the question about children is qualified by the wording “recognition of children of same-sex couples: which position do you agree with the most?”, 42% say they would prefer or have no problem if legal recognition of children raised by same-sex couples is allowed gender, while 47% answer that they would like it not to be allowed. 5% of respondents say they are indifferent about what will happen.
Fan violence – measures to deal with it
In the third major issue raised in the Sky poll and related to the phenomenon of fan violence, the vast majority of respondents believe that it is part of a wider social issue of violence (81%), while 14% believe that it is due to characteristics of the sports field .
Regarding the measures announced to deal with the phenomenon, 43% believe that they are moving in the right direction, but some corrections are needed, while 11% believe that they are in the right direction and as they should be. However, 34% state that the measures are in the wrong direction, while 12% state “I don’t know/ I don’t answer/ I don’t have an opinion”.
