The president of SYRIZA-PS, Stefanos Kasselakis, has sent a message on social media to the government not to make national concessions towards Turkey, on the occasion of statements by ND MP, Angelos Syrigos on the Treaty of Lausanne.

In his post, Mr. Kasselakis states:

“Next to an Erdogan who has been trying for a long time to revise the Treaty of Lausanne, the ND MP Mr. Syrigos came today to overstate that the Treaty of Lausanne is obsolete and 97% of it has no value’! When you give such a gift to Erdogan, the ‘I didn’t mean that’ is unnecessary. Immediately after his re-election, in 2023, Mr Mitsotakis spoke of ‘concessions’. Then followed the ‘bowings’ and on just the 2nd day of 2024, we pass to a worthless Treaty”.

He then addresses the government: “Let them know that no matter how much they prepare the Greek people through such statements, they will find them united against them. And of course, the Patriotic Left is not going to allow a deviation of even one centimeter from the fixed position of the Greek governments regarding the Treaty of Lausanne and our sovereign rights”.

SYRIZA: Syrigo’s statements on demilitarization are dangerous – The government should take a stand

SYRIZA-PS issued an announcement on the statement of ND MP and former Minister, Angelos Syrigos.

“The statement of ND MP and former Minister, Angelos Syrigos, who describes the Treaty of Lausanne as “obsolete” in relation to the demilitarization of the islands” confirms the serious concerns that SYRIZA-PS has long expressed for the Government’s stance on this extremely critical issue.

Mr. Syrigos contradicts the fixed positions of Greece and leaves room for exploitation of his statement by Turkey in the context of its unacceptable position on the revision of the Treaty. In addition, it diverts the Greek-Turkish dialogue from the goal of appealing to The Hague for a continental shelf/EEZ, by opening a TV show, an issue that is not and should not be on the agenda.”
