SYRIZA PS will table a question in the Parliament about the banks in the near future, while it will also present its positions on the functioning of the banking sector, as stated by the party’s president Stefanos Kasselakis in the meeting he had with a delegation of employees at Piraeus Bank.

After the meeting that took place in his office in the Parliament, Mr. Kasselakis stated: “We had a very productive discussion which unfortunately shows that a theoretically mature industry such as the banking industry is an industry that is not working properly in Greece. It is an industry that has characteristics of cartelization, in which competition does not work, the quality of services is very low, the profits are exorbitant and the workers are at risk for the services they provide to the Greek citizen”.

The head of Labor, Giorgos Gavrilos, who participated in the meeting, said: “Against the excess profits of the banks, we advocate the preservation of jobs for all workers, with labor regulations and full rights. And of course we ask for the provision of better services from the banks in the region, with the maintenance of branches to meet the needs of local communities”.

The head of Finance Nikos Pappas said: “Keeping the stores is a matter of regional development, the banks have been recapitalized with money from the Greek people.” He pointed out that SYRIZA PS raised the issue in Parliament and added: “Banks had exorbitant profits of 4.3 billion euros in 2023 and it cannot be explained by simple logic that the public withdraws from its participation in such profitable companies.” After noting the wide difference in deposit and lending rates, he added that “we will be on the side of workers with parliamentary scrutiny to highlight these issues”.

In closing, Stefanos Kasselakis said: “We will proceed, in the next period, to submit a parliamentary question and we will present the positions of the SYRIZA PS on the banking sector”.
