Earlier today, the session of the Plenary of the Parliament started with an anniversary report on the “Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust”, while immediately after the report a minute’s silence was observed by the House.
In these ways the Greek parliament aims to keep historical memory alive, paying self-evident honor to the millions of victims of the Holocaust and recalling the need for constant vigilance and vigilance in the defense of human rights and democratic values.
In January 2004, by a unanimous decision of the Greek Parliament, January 27 was established as a day of remembrance and honor for Greek Jews who lost their lives in Nazi concentration camps, while the following year, the UN General Assembly declared January 27 as “International Holocaust Remembrance Day”. This particular day was chosen because on January 27, 1945 Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, the largest concentration and extermination camp of the Nazi regime.
