What did the rapporteur and secretary of the Political Committee of the New Democracy, Maria Syrengela, say about the bill, during the discussion of the articles of the bill, in the competent parliamentary committees.
“The Civil Marriage Equality Bill strengthens individual-human rights, it does not deprive them from anyone else, it does not limit them, it does not affect the institution of the family”, said the rapporteur and secretary of the Political Committee of the New Democracy Maria Syregeladuring the discussion of the articles of the bill, in the competent parliamentary committees.
Regarding the individual provisions, Maria Syregela referred to article 3, which stipulates that marriage is concluded between two persons of different or same sex. “Thus, for the first time, marriage equality is recognized in the Greek legal order. With this wording, there is no change in the legal terms of the two sexes (man and woman), mother and father, parents, as they apply to this day in the national legal order.” said Mrs. Sirengela.
In relation to article 4, the member of the ND underlined that “an anachronistic and unconstitutional provision, contrary to the principle of gender equality, is corrected – indeed belatedly”.
“In case of omission of the declaration of the surname of the children by the parents, the children will not acquire that of the father, but a composite surname consisting of the surnames of their parents in alphabetical order. However, the concept of father and mother is not abolished in any case. So instead, we are correcting an injustice that also affects the marriage of heterosexual couples. Thus, in the few cases where the children’s surname is not declared in advance, they will acquire the mother’s surname and not only the father’s”said the ND rapporteur.
“This bill, guided by the good practices of other European countries, in which marriage equality has been in place for many decades, takes care to protect the interest of the child of these families. At the same time, it does not in the least affect the safeguards that apply to our right to Medically Assisted Reproduction, to adoption, to the protection of children, to the strengthening of parents raising minor children.” said Mrs. Syrengela and insisted that the bill being introduced for voting “it is a bill that strengthens individual – human rights, does not deprive anyone else of them, does not limit them, does not affect the institution of the family”.
