“Stone-throwing both the investigation committee for its operation and the Greek Justice, if it is not unacceptable, is certainly dangerous for the operation of the country’s institutions”
The work carried out by both the parliamentary inquiry committee and the judiciary in the investigation of the Tempe case does not lend itself to cheap impressionism, as stated by the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, Dimitris Markopoulos, on the occasion of today’s (Thursday) joint statement of the president and the prosecutor of the Supreme Court regarding publications and announcements that “are directed against the Greek Justice and its officials, accusing indifference and malpractices in the judicial treatment of the “Tragedy of Tempe””.
“Stone-throwing both the investigation committee for its operation and the Greek Justice, if it is not unacceptable, is certainly dangerous for the operation of the country’s institutions, much more so when we also have a European political battle ahead of us, the European elections” , noted Mr. Markopoulos.
At the start of today’s work of the inquiry committee, opposition MPs criticized the government because of yesterday’s resolution of the European Parliament, with which concern is expressed “for very serious threats against the values of the EU in Greece”, while they requested the expansion of the list of witnesses who will testify, with names such as those of Mr. Genidounia, Spiliopoulos, Stathopoulos and Xifaras. As the MP of the major opposition, V. Kokkalis, said, SYRIZA-PS does not simply state its concerns, “but also the now serious indications of bias in the parliamentary majority, which does not wish to shed light on the investigation” for Tempi, while, PASOK-Movement for Change MP Milena Apostolaki spoke for a “bottleneck” resolution, not against the country but against the government that prevented the establishment of a preliminary investigation committee.
On behalf of the majority, ND MP L. Tsavdaridis called yesterday’s EP resolution despicable, which, as he pointed out, was voted by less than half of the MEPs, that it came from the well-known “obsessive” group of MEPs that slanders Greece, ignores a series of reforms promoted by the Greek government, and is an attempt to drag the country down with the aim of suspending its funding. “What the opposition seeks, to bring the European political battle (to our committee), we will not allow it. Neither the committee nor the victims of the accident are offering themselves for pre-election crowns”, pointed out Mr. Tsavdaridis. As for the issue of expanding the list of witnesses, the ND deputy said that next week the majority will submit its proposals, based on what the witnesses who have been called and testified have contributed up to that time.
