PASOK MPs request the convening of the Foreign Affairs Committee in their letter Manzos, Giannakopoulou, Michaelidis, Biagis, Nikitiadis and Paraskevaidesafter yesterday post by the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on platform X, in which he said: “I spoke with the Greek prime minister about the implementation of the agreements reached during his recent visit to Ukraine, as well as our continued defense cooperation, particularly in strengthening our air defenses.”

He also added that on March 6 in Odessa, Prime Minister Mr. Mitsotakis was able to see firsthand the importance of reliable protection of our skies. In addition, I informed him about the Russian strike in Kiev this morning. We also agreed to speed up work on a bilateral security agreement based on the G7 Vilnius Declaration.”

After the suspension of the Ukrainian president, PASOK MPs with their letter to Dora Bakoyannis they request the convening of the Foreign Affairs Committee with the participation of the foreign and defense ministers, with the aim of “detailed and timely information to the political forces and by extension the citizens, about the commitments that the country has undertaken or is about to undertake at a bilateral or multilateral level”.

The letter from PASOK MPs

“To the President of the Standing Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Theodora Bakoyannis

Dear Madam President,

As is widely known, yesterday, March 21, 2024, the President of Ukraine, Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky, in his post on a social network, explicitly referred to agreements reached with the Greek Prime Minister, during his recent visit to Odessa on March 6 2024, as well as in the ongoing defense cooperation of the two states, in particular to strengthen the Ukrainian air defense.

The Ukrainian President’s post follows the Greek Prime Minister’s visit to Odessa, during which a Russian attack took place, which we unequivocally condemned. However, neither before the visit nor afterwards has there been official information to the political forces about the purpose of the visit and the subject of the meetings, much less about any agreements made during the visit.

From the first day of the illegal invasion of the Russian army on the territory of Ukraine, we sided with the defending country, actively supporting the defense of its territorial integrity, without reservation. We believe that Greece must unwaveringly pursue the implementation of international law, against any form of revisionism and aggression.

However, this does not negate the need for detailed and timely information to the political forces and by extension the citizens, for the commitments that the country has undertaken or is about to undertake at a bilateral or multilateral level.

It is, after all, our firm and timeless belief that the necessary consensus, especially in matters of foreign policy and national defense, requires information and transparency.

For all the above reasons and in the light of the latest developments, we request that the Committee be convened as an emergency and that Messrs. Ministers of Foreign Affairs and National Defencein order to inform the National Delegation in detail about the conclusion and content of the agreements, as well as about all the commitments undertaken by our country to support Ukraine.

The requesting Members of Parliament

Manzos Dimitrios

Konstantina Giannakopoulou

Michaelidis Stavros

Biagis Dimitrios

Georgios Nikitiadis

Paraskevaidis Panagiotis”

Government sources: There is no bilateral agreement

Besides, yesterday government sources clarified that “no deal was signed” between Greece and Ukraine during the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Odessa.

They clarify how the G7 last July adopted a joint Declaration of support for Ukraine’s security over timeto which the EU and its member states have joined.

As they note, following this Statement the EU is discussing with Kiev an EU-Ukraine security support agreement. Our country, like the other EU member states, is discussing bilaterally with Ukraine.
