In his intervention, the parliamentary representative of the ND, K. Pleuris said that once it was passed (the Treaty of Prespa), the only possibilities that exist “is to monitor the observance of these international treaties and to carry out the actions defined by the international conditions. He even emphasized that this does not mean that New Democracy is changing its stance: ND is, was and will be against the Prespa treaty. But it is a voted international treaty and therefore binds the country. And the possibility that exists, is to monitor (its compliance) and have a reserved basic weapon which is the European perspective, once NATO membership has been granted.

Therefore, Mr. Pleuris added, the politically responsible were the ones who voted for the treaty in January 2019. “And today what is happening shows precisely that this bad condition, this miserable condition, was not even guaranteed in these minimums. And the only one abandoning Greece to bring the cooperation protocols is SYRIZA. [..] In this bad condition with which you left the country, we come and say: let’s protect what can be done and obviously this protection is done by watching the other side and not completing procedures that have no return…

It is recalled that during her swearing-in at the Parliament and despite the fact that in the official text of the oath dictated to her the country was referred to as “North Macedonia”, the new President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Mrs Silianovska-Davkova, chose to call her country “Macedonia”. Strong reactions followed, triggering a corresponding debate in Parliament.
