“The US supports the Prespa (North Macedonia) Agreement with Greece and is disappointed that President Gordana Silianovska-Davkova did not use the constitutional name North Macedonia during her swearing-in, said today from Skopje the Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Relations of the State Department, Elizabeth Allen, who is currently on a tour of Western Balkan countries.

“Of course, we support the Prespa Agreement and we were disappointed to see that the president did not use the full and official name North Macedonia. We will see what the government will do. We are in constant dialogue with the government under formation. Therefore, I would not like to prejudge any consequence here, but, of course, we hope and encourage the new leadership of North Macedonia to adhere to international agreements,” the senior State Department official told the Skopje website, “SDK”.

It is noted that the new president of North Macedonia, Gordana Silianovska (who in the presidential elections of May 8 was elected as the new president of the country, as a candidate of the right-wing party VMRO-DPMNE), during her swearing-in on May 12, called the country as ” Macedonia”, despite the fact that in the text of the oath, which was dictated by outgoing parliament speaker Jovan Mitreski, calling on Silianovska to repeat it, the country was referred to as “North Macedonia”.

This action by the new president of North Macedonia provoked strong reactions from the Greek side, while it was disapproved by the EU, the USA and NATO.
