Today, the Plenary of the European Parliament turns into a press room. And journalists have been sitting in the seats of the MEPs since the morning, in order to transmit the available information on the evolution of the electoral process throughout Europe, as well as the estimates for the new composition, at the level of political groups, of the European Parliament.

According to official information, the European Parliament is expected to publish the first assessment of the composition of the new European Parliament at the level of political groups at 21:15 – 21:45 Greek timebased on the programming that has been announced by those responsible for monitoring the results at the headquarters of the European Parliament,

As noted, the assessment will be based on a special methodology, pre-election polls and exit polls available at that time. The assessment will be presented on the screens installed in the plenary hall, but will also be shared online. And it will be constantly updated.

It is also underlined that the forecast will be based on the structure of the outgoing EP, as the future composition of the elected EP and its political groups cannot be predicted before the session to form it into a body (July 16-19).

Thus, national parties already represented in the EP will be placed in the same political group that they belonged to in the outgoing Parliament, while national parties not currently represented in the EP will be placed in a political group if they are formally affiliated with that group or participate fully as members of a European political party (registered with the Authority for European Political Parties and European Political Foundations).

The rest of the national parties (which are not currently represented in the EP nor have any official connection with a European political party or political group) will be classified in the category “other”, without prejudging their political orientation and which political groups they will cooperate with.

Exit polls and official results

At the offices of the European Parliament in Brussels, the estimates of results (exit polls) will also be collected and their notification by the EP is estimated to start after 19:15 Greek time, depending on which member states they will be held or not and , of course, in which Member States the polls will have closed.

The official results of the European elections can be published by the EP only after 23:00 (Central European Summer Time), that is, midnight, Greek time, when the last ballots in Italy will have closed. Specifically, the publication of the first official results is expected at 00:15-00:45 Greek time.

The European Parliament will publish data and estimates in all 24 official EU languages on the website: https://results.elections.europa.eu/el/

Finally, the heads of the political groups of the European Parliament (of the outgoing one) and leading candidates for the office of the president of the European Commission are expected to make statements to the journalists during the evening, on the “Konstantinos Karamanlis” bridge and on Wiertz Street where they will be stationed also stand-up live reporting positions.
