A message from prison is sent by Fredis Belerisin the wake of his conviction, which caused the strong reaction of Athens.
It is noted that the elected mayor of Heimarra and ND MEP will remain in prison until Octobersince yesterday’s (Tuesday) decision of the Tirana Court of Appeal reiterates the first instance decision for two years’ imprisonment.
This decision overturned estimates that a reduction of the sentence and release of the expatriate politician was expected.

“Greece had from the beginning expressed its concern and reflection on many aspects of the case concerning the prosecution of the elected Mayor of Himaras, Freddy Beleris.
“Specifically, the reservations related to the violation of the presumption of innocence, the nature of the evidence presented, the discounting of his conviction, the imposition of a disproportionate sentence and the deprivation of his right to take the oath, as a result of which the Municipality of Himara has been in charge for a year by persons who do not have democratic legitimacy.
“Today’s decision of the Tirana Court of Appeal supports these concerns about the level of the rule of law and the protection of minorities in Albania. Today, Mr. Beleris is not only the elected Mayor of Himaras. He is also an elected member of the European Parliament.
“It is, therefore, an obligation of the Albanian authorities to take all the necessary measures in order to give him the opportunity to attend the work of the European Parliament, starting with its Plenary, next July”.
