The reaction of the Minister of Immigration Policy and Asylum, Notis Mitarakis, was provoked by a statement of the leader of the official opposition, Alexis Tsiprasat debate in Parliament on the crisis in Ukraine and the consequences in Greece.
Specifically, Mr. Tsipras said: “It is a shame to hear statements today that those who come from Ukraine are real refugees, while others who have a dark complexion are not real refugees. And they do not care about honor when they are heard from government lips. “
This disgust of Mr. Tsipras provoked reactions from the government seats, with Mr. Tsipras adding: “Your minister said it, Mr. Mitarakis, the Minister of Immigration Policy, do not challenge me who said it …”.
Then, taking the floor, Mr. Mitarakis said: “I really said that Europe must show solidarity with the refugees from Ukraine and I rightly described them as real, because Ukraine borders the European Union and is being invaded.”
He continued: “I did not make this statement in contrast to other groups of refugees, but there are economic migrants who are not entitled to asylum. Asylum seekers coming from far away and crossing the borders of one or more safe countries, such applications are unacceptable. That is what international law says, not the ideologies of the left, “he added.
