After the meeting, the Undersecretary of National Defense Nikos Hardalias and the Governor of the Bank of Greece signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between Ministry of National Defense and her Bank of Greecein the “Ioannis Kapodistrias” hall, at the Ministry of National Defense.

In particular, it is provided:
– The support of initiatives and actions of the Ministry of National Defense related to the issue of climate change, through the provision of know-how by the Climate Change Impact Study Committee (EMEKA) of the Bank of Greece.
– The possible joint participation of the two parties in programs of national scope, which promote the need for adaptation of our country, in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.
With the memorandum of cooperation, the two parties may, by special agreement, decide to carry out the following indicative (and not restrictive) actions:
– Informing and sensitizing the personnel of the Armed Forces for the mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
– Collection, analysis and dissemination of environmental information (such as records of marine mammals, data on salinity and temperature of the seas, etc.) by the services of the Ministry of National Defense (eg National Meteorological Service, Hydrographic Service, Army Geographical Service) on the evolution of related to climate change and biodiversity protection.
– Development of methodology for assessing the risks and impacts of climate change on the operations of the Armed Forces (at operational and non-operational level) through the use of high resolution regional climate models in specific points or areas of interest. The analysis will include the identification of appropriate climate indicators that will capture the risks and impacts of climate change on the operations of the Armed Forces.
– Identification and / or identification of existing (or non) existing capabilities, sources, instruments and means for the safest response to the most frequent natural disasters due to climate change and affecting the Armed Forces.
– Carrying out joint information actions (workshops, lectures, educational publications, press releases, etc.), in order to spread the results of this cooperation.
The memorandum enters into force today, with the signature of the representatives of the two parties and its duration is agreed for an indefinite period.

Hardalias, whose responsibilities also include the specialization of the Armed Forces policy in matters of civil protection and climate crisis in accordance with the general government policy, stated that the signing of the memorandum “is a tangible proof of interoperability and cooperation for protection of the environment and the response to the climate crisis, under difficult conditions based on the personal experiences which of course come from my involvement with these issues “.
