“If Turkey wishes to restart of Euro-Turkish relations and their expansion, and he wants everything mentioned by the press representative of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the April Conclusions of the European Council are very clear, and they connect clearly Euro-Turkish with the progress in the Cyprus issue. Therefore, here is Rhodes”.

According to ERT, the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Viktoros Papadopoulos, gave this answer when he was asked to comment on the demands set by Ankara upon accepting the invitation from Brussels to attend the Informal Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU, the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan.

It is recalled that the representative of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announcing the invitation, said that the positive approach of the EU it should not be limited to such meetings. Ankara, he added, expects “concrete steps” regarding its accession, the abolition of visas for Turks, talks on the modernization of the customs union and the deepening of the dialogue on issues concerning the economy, politics, transport and energy.

Mr. Papadopoulos added that at the informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers that will take place on August 29 in Brussels and where the Turkish Foreign Minister will be present, the Foreign Minister of Cyprus, Konstantinos Kobo, will have the opportunity to indicate all this in the presence of Mr. Fidan .

“Beyond Interconnection of the Euro-Turkish relations with the efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, the Conclusions state very clearly that any progress in Euro-Turkish relations must be gradual, proportionate and irreversible. So this is the framework in which they can move, the improvement of Euro-Turkish relations and what Turkey is asking for”, Mr. Papadopoulos concluded.
