Statement by the candidate for president of SYRIZA-PS, Sokratis Famellos
Criticizing the government for the fires that continue in October, SYRIZA president candidate Sokratis Famellos made a statement.
Although we entered October, we start the month with a mega-fire that is ongoing in the area of Xylokastro Corinthia. A fire, which developed fronts 30 km long with multiple effects and unfortunately also with victims.
We express our condolences and sorrow for the dead. But also our support for those who are currently operating on the front lines. Our first obligation is to contribute to their work.
Recurring, unfortunately, with this government is the phenomenon of a fire going out at sea.
Evidently, the evacuation of the settlements and the protection of the citizens are necessary, but the Greek state cannot remain in the role of a spectator. There is a question of political choices, let’s not hide.
There are two biggest problems:
-Forest fire prevention policy, which should aim to limit the size of fires and this means reinforcement and resources to the forest service. The Mitsotakis government does not invest in prevention.
-The planning of civil protection and fire prevention studies for the coordination of the extinguishing forces, to ensure access, logistical infrastructure, cooperation with the forest service and self-government, but also the best coordination of the field. In addition, there is a long delay in the equipment of the Fire Department, discredited ground means and delays in the “Aegis” program. While the government announced in the middle of all this the HOLIDAY OF EMPLOYMENT of 2,500 trained firefighters in one month!!
Today priority is given to extinguishing fire and the safety of those in the area.
And of course then the restoration of both the property and the environment.
However, the country cannot continue unarmed in the face of the great challenges of the climate crisis.
A strong state presupposes political change. Mr. Mitsotakis neither wants nor can…”
