The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, appealed for a ceasefire in Ukraine, as well as the opening of humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians, attending the extraordinary Summit in Versailles.
“We are here, in the shadow of the greatest war that the European continent has experienced since the end of World War II. First of all, I would like to express my disgust for what happened yesterday in Mariupol and the tragic images we saw with the bombing of the pediatric hospital. “I call once again for a ceasefire but also for humanitarian corridors so that those who want to leave the war zones can do so safely,” said the prime minister.
At the same time, he added that the significant consequences of the Russian invasion will be put on the table, as well as the reaffirmation of the unity of the EU. and her determination. “To intensify, if manipulated, the framework of sanctions in order to put as much pressure as possible on Russia to come to the negotiating table,” he stressed.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis made a special reference to the effects on the energy market, noting that the day before yesterday he sent a letter to the President of the Commission, requesting European intervention, in order to include a ceiling on gas prices. “We need to protect consumers, businesses and farmers from price fluctuations that are not dictated by supply and demand, but by speculative games,” he said.
The Prime Minister underlined that issues of strategic autonomy of Europe will be discussed at the Summit. “We believe in the need for Europe to align its geopolitical power with its economic potential. “The conflict in Ukraine has been the violent adulthood of our continent,” he said.
Finally, he stressed that the issue of excluding part or all of defense spending from deficit calculations will be raised, so that countries such as Greece, which spends more on defense, are not punished by such a strategic choice.
