Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is going to Lebanon today, in the first visit of a European prime minister to the country after the latest ceasefire and the developments in Syria.
His visit sends a message of Greece’s strong role and presence in the region.
What program of the prime minister:
- At 11:00 (local time and Greek time) the prime minister will have a meeting with the Patriarch of Antioch John I’, in the presence of the Metropolitan of Beirut Ilias.
- At 12:00, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berry, at the Ain el-Tineh palace.
- At 12:40 the Prime Minister will have a meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, at the Grand Serail. Joint statements by the two leaders will follow.
It is recalled that Kyriakos Mitsotakis was scheduled to travel to Beirut on December 6however his trip was delayed due to damage to the government aircraft.
Greece and Lebanon are linked by traditional ties of friendship and in the contacts the Prime Minister will have, he is expected to reiterate Greece’s readiness to help strengthen Lebanon’s state structures – among them the Armed Forces that play a crucial role in the implementation of the ceasefire .
