The urgent need for an immediate extension to 12 p.m. of the Aegialitis Zone of Greece and Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, as a direct and practical questioning of the very legal status of the “Turkish-Libyan memorandum” and a possible “Turkish-Syrian memorandum”, pointed out the former President of the Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

In particular, Mr. Pavlopoulos, in his speech on “The conditions for resolving the Cyprus Issue according to International and European Law”, at the International Conference on “Hellenism of Cyprus” held in Kalamata, stated that “from the side of Greece and Cyprus and for the above-mentioned full exercise of the rights according to International Law, in particular their stricto sensu Sovereignty, in advance of the urgent need for immediate expansion to 12. n.m. of their Eyalitis Zone in the Eastern Mediterranean. And this – par excellence after the recent military “accomplishments” in Syria – because such an extension constitutes, as a result, a direct and practical questioning of the very legal status of the “Turkish-Libyan memorandum” of 2019 and, on the other hand, of the now visible possible “conclusion” of a similar “Turkish-Syrian memorandum” on EEZ”.

“Actually, and as it is now internationally accepted, the aforementioned “Turkish-Libyan memorandum” on the EEZ and the possible future “Turkish-Syrian memorandum” are legally non-existent and do not produce legal results because they violate, and quite obviously, a multitude of fundamental provisions of the Law of the Sea of the UN” emphasized Mr. Pavlopoulos.
