In 2025, the extension of the Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria, the Patra – Pyrgos highway as well as the Vonitsa – Lefkada road will be completed
Important are the projects implemented within 2024, with a milestone of Thessaloniki Metrowhich is the most emblematic work of the last decade. At the same time, initiatives of national importance for the implementation of development infrastructure as well as the strengthening and upgrading of public transport have been launched for 2025 by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
In fact, as stated by the responsible Minister, Christos Staikouras: “The Greek economy – despite the instability that prevails at the global level – is being upgraded, enlarged and strengthened, as public finances have improved substantially. In this collective targeting and effort, the role of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is of key importance.”
In particular, in 2024, the modernization of infrastructure and transport with the simultaneous improvement of road safety was set as an absolute priority. Thus, in the year that is leaving, the Thessaloniki Metro, one of the most emblematic projects of the last decade, the road axis Aktio – Amvrakia, an important part of the E65, from Lamia to Kalambaka, the road axis Kalloni – Sigri in Lesbos were delivered. The transfer of the Attica Road was completed, the construction of the Bralos – Amfissa road axis began, the contract for the Ioannina – Kakavia road axis was signed.

Also, the line 4 of the Athens Metro continues its construction, with the Metropontians completing their work in 2026, the connection of E65 with Egnatia Odos will be completed at the end of the 1st quarter of 2026, the construction of the Eastern Inner Ring Road of Thessaloniki is progressing. The Northern Road Axis of Crete is progressing, with the contracting of the Chania – Heraklion section expected in the first months of 2025, while the new airport in Kasteli is more than 40% complete.
In addition, in the context of dealing with the consequences of the climate crisis, the Ministry of Infrastructure proceeded with the implementation of large irrigation and anti-flooding projects and the improvement of water supply and drainage infrastructure throughout the territory, while in 2025, corresponding projects will be completed.
In fact, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport proceeded to implementation smaller – in budget – building infrastructurewith the upgrading – primarily – of schools, hospitals and courthouses, but also the maintenance of existing infrastructure projects. Among other things, a contract was signed for the construction of 17 school units in Central Macedonia, while the rehabilitation projects of school units in areas affected by catastrophic floods are being implemented.
Regarding transport, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is implementing the reform of the Greek railway. The new, single entity that will include OSE, ERGOSE and the section of GAIAOSE that deals with rolling stock, will replace the multi-talented structure that exists for the substantial upgrade of the transportation project.
An important set of policies are also implemented to strengthen electric mobility, as in the last 2 years, it has been subsidized with the amount of 60 million. euros the purchase of 20,000 electric vehicles.
Meanwhile, an important priority is the upgrading of the public transport fleet with the aim of reducing the energy footprint, improving the quality of services provided to citizens, and accessibility for people with disabilities.
Already, in Athens, 270 new buses are in circulationanti-pollution technology, aiming for 400 by the end of 2024, and 950 in the summer of 2025.
Also, on Line 1, 14 trains are being rehabilitated and 9 trains are being upgraded, with a significant percentage of them being ready by 2025.
In Thessaloniki, 110 new electric buses are in circulation and there is a supply of another 159 vehicles through leasing, with the result that 50% of the OASTH fleet will be new vehicles from the beginning of the new year.
According to Mr. Staikura: “We run these initiatives at a constantly improving pace, with efficiency and quality. Thus, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport contributes to the effort to upgrade the quality of life of all citizens, the expansion of the production base and the continuous and all-round strengthening of our homeland”.
