The New Democracy MEP George Autiasas a member of Budget Committee of the European Parliamentwith an urgent question to the European Commission raises the issue of direct financing of the Attica Region for the restoration of the problem in Kifissos.

Giorgos Autias emphasizes in his question: “Kifissos is one of the largest rivers in the Attica region as its length extends to 27 kilometers, affecting urban areas as it passes through 15 municipalities. It is the road artery of the Attica basin, as tens of thousands of vehicles pass through it every hour during peak hours.”

According to statements by speleologists, who investigated the area, in the last twenty-four hours, on television stations, radios and news broadcasts, walls of the riverbed have been destroyed, resulting in the creation of a third lake. Already, the Region of Attica has started procedures to clean up Kifissos, but the problems continue

The new developments with the existence of three lakes create questions from experts, reasonable reflection, but also the need for immediate intervention by the Commission for new financing of the restoration projects in Kifissos.

The new Commissioner for the Budget in the EU, in his hearing, announced to us, that in view of the next Multiannual Financial Framework, the regions will be exclusively responsible for receiving funding for projects in their regions.

Based on these data, the European Commission is asked:

  • Is he willing to finance the full remediation of the problem?
  • Will he support every project concerning the anti-flood shielding of Kifissos and Attica?
  • Will he launch every project that will contribute to the upgrading of the road network of Attica?
