A Briton, aged 31, who was an ancestor of the former governess to Princes William and Harry, is among 14 people killed on New Year’s Eve in a vehicle attack in New OrleansBritish police announced today.

Charles is “deeply saddened” by the death of Edward Pettyfer, Britain’s PA news agency reported. The king contacted the victim’s family to express his condolences.

Edward Pettyfer was an ancestor of William and Harry’s former governess, Tiggy Lage Burke, who is also known as Alexandra Pettyfer. She married Charles Pettyfer, Edward’s father, in the late 1990s.

Prince William was also informed of the 31-year-old’s death, according to the PA news agency.

The Metropolitan Police said it was supporting the victim’s family and assisting them in the process of repatriating his body to Britain.

Edward’s family is “devastated by the tragedy of Ed’s death.”

“We will miss him very much. Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost a member of their family following this terrible attack,” added the statement, cited by the Metropolitan Police.

Fourteen people were killed and about 30 injured in the attack, which took place in the tourist French Quarter of New Orleans, in the southern US, in the midst of New Year’s celebrations.

The American ex-serviceman, Samsud-Din Jabbar, “inspired” by the jihadist group Islamic State, crashed his vehicle into the gathered crowd. He died during a shootout with the police.
