In detail, the message of George Papandreou:

“Kostas Simitis was a fighter of the Anti-dictatorship Struggle, a founding member of PASOK, a fighter for Change, a minister of PASOK governments and a prime minister with a vision for a strong Greece with a voice and a role in the EU and in the world.

A politician with a personal and integrated point of view, a genuine social democrat, with a vision for a democratic and progressive Europe, with a dynamic and decisive role in global developments. He was one of the EU leaders who fully understood the importance and necessity of a united Europe.

In this spirit, he built as prime minister a coherent strategy for the modernization of Greece and its dynamic presence in the Balkans, in the wider region and in the EU, which yielded significant successes and led it to the chorus of the 25 most important countries in the world.

The shape of the country changed with major projects and it joined the Euro zone, Cyprus joined the EU and Turkey agreed to follow a policy of peace and European approach, Greece acquired a strong voice in Europe and an important role in our wider region.

In this endeavor I worked closely with him and had the good fortune to meet a man consistent with his principles, hardworking and efficient.

His contribution to the country was great and will be evaluated accordingly by history.

I express my deepest condolences to his family.”
