Mitsotakis: We have the obligation to further strengthen the NSS

by

“As we come out of the pandemic, we have an obligation to the Greek citizens to further strengthen the National Health Systemto make it more durable and to ensure that we place special emphasis on the quality of care “, said the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the inauguration of the renovated facilities which now houses the Center for Quality of Care and Safety of Patients, which he has established in Athens the World Health Organization.

In his greeting, the Prime Minister referred to “the amazing work done by all our health professionals” to deal with the pandemic, and pointed out that in the past two years the strong points of the NSS emerged, but at the same time its weaknesses became apparent, one of which is unequal access to quality care.

He then stressed that we are not done with the coronavirus and we must learn to coexist with it. “We all fought for more than two years with an unknown enemy and we are not done yet. And we have to think about what it will be like to coexist with Covid in the long run. What will this mean for vaccination policies when autumn comes? “What does this mean in terms of basic precautions?”

The changes in the NSS

The Prime Minister made extensive reference to the philosophy that governs the changes in the NSS. “I want to ensure that in Greece, regardless of where one lives, regardless of whether one has access to a regional hospital or a top university hospital in one of our major cities, we will have uniform standards in the quality of care,” said Kyriakos. Mitsotakis.

“This of course means that we approach healthcare as something continuous, starting with public health and prevention, moving on to primary care, where we are starting a very important reform. “Reviewing the operation of our hospitals and post-hospital care”, he added.

“We are here to break down practices where there is no co-operation or conciliation, established interests and all those who do not see healthcare from the end-user’s perspective. “And the end user is the citizen, who deserves better health care, especially in this complex world after the pandemic,” said the Prime Minister.

The launch of his new program was also announced at the event Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Healthwhich will cover all 53 countries under the responsibility of the WHO Regional Directorate for Europe and was drafted on a proposal from the Prime Minister to the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge.

“I remember very strongly that I was in your office, at the Maximos Palace, when you told me: ‘We must give priority to the issue of the mental health of the whole society, especially children and adolescents,'” Mr Kluge said. “Well, Mr. Prime Minister, we have listened to your advice and we are grateful for your support,” he added.

“We must put an end to this stigma, to these taboos. And to ensure that in this very difficult and complex world – where we face challenges ranging from bullying to eating disorders to identity issues, teenagers living in this parallel world, the real and the virtual world – to ensure that we adapt the our services in the field of mental health, to ensure that we offer to children and adolescents the highest quality in terms of mental health “, said on his part Mr. Mitsotakis.

In his own position, Mr. Kluge emphasized the close cooperation between the WHO and Greece, given the government’s emphasis on health policies. “The Office that we are launching today here in Athens is a tangible and obvious manifestation of this cooperation”, said characteristically the Regional Director of the Organization.

“I know that improving the quality of health care in Greece is a priority for you. “By hosting the WHO Center for Quality of Care, Greece is able to lead the way in improving the quality of care throughout the region,” Kluge added.

The event was also greeted by the Minister of Development and Investment Adonis Georgiadis, the Minister of Health Thanos Plevris, the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias, the Deputy Minister of Health Mina Gaga and the Deputy Minister of Health, Zoe Rapti.
