Egypt’s ambassador to Greece, Omar Amer, noted that President Abdel Fatah al -Sisi’s visit to Athens would upgrade the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Speaking to the Middle East News Agency (MENA) on Wednesday, Ambassador Amer said the visit included the launch of the Egyptian-Greece high-level cooperation council, which would “upgrade” political and economic ties between the two nations.
He highlighted the long -term historical and geographical bonds between the two states as a basis for a partnership and cooperation in various areas, which he described as “integrated” and “strategies”.
Egyptian officials referred to the selection of Egypt by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his first visit to the Middle East after his re -election in July 2023.
He added that his participation in the Cairo Peace Summit in October of that year and the start of the integrated EU-Egypt strategic partnership.
Economic and energy cooperation
Bilateral trade between the two nations increased to € 2 billion in 2024, from € 1,925 billion last year, with Egypt recording a trade surplus of € 344 million.
Greek investments in Egypt amounted to 225m euros in February 2025, stretching to 226 companies.
Egyptian investments in Greece, mainly in real estate, reached 38 million euros.
In the meantime, energy cooperation between the two countries continued to expand.
The two countries have also signed an agreement on the funding of feasibility studies for the Gregy interconnection project, which aims to export Egyptian net energy to Europe.
The project was registered by the EU as a project of common interest in late 2023, releasing financial support.
In April 2025, the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a grant agreement with the Elica Interconnector of the Kopelouzos Group to finance initial studies.
Egypt and Greece are also cooperating in the energy sector as Member States in the Eastern Mediterranean gas forum.
Regional coordination
The ambassador emphasized to Mena the strong alignment on regional issues between Cairo and Athens, especially in Libya and Gaza.
He said that Greece supports Egypt’s positions, and praised Cairo’s diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in Gaza, including the reconstruction plan.
Greece participated in the summit for Cairo Peace in October 2023 and at a Ministerial Conference on Humanitarian Aid in Gaza (December 2024).
Concerning Libya, Astar said that Greece remains committed to Egypt’s place and regularly consulted with Cairo.
A bilateral immigration agreement has allowed 5,000 Egyptian workers in Georgia to work legally in Greece through a structured seasonal program.
Trilateral platform with Cyprus
Amer also stressed to Mena the importance of the tripartite cooperation mechanism with Greece and Cyprus, which began in 2014 and is now in its tenth round.
He described the platform as a key means of political, economic and military coordination between the three countries in the Eastern Mediterranean amid regional instability and concerns about energy security.
He also highlighted the Nostos Cultural Initiative: Reviving Roots, which began in 2018 to reconnect Greeks and Cypriots with their Egyptian roots.
The mechanism has been upgraded to the level of Foreign Minister, with regular consultations between the three countries.
Egypt’s diplomatic representative in Athens stressed that joint summit statements consistently reflect Egypt’s wider regional role and increasing alignment with European partners.
