Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met in Cairo today with his Egyptian bond of Badr Abdelatty and discussed all the issues concerning the Monastery of St. Catherine of Sinai. During the meeting it was agreed to work the two sides “in the direction of securing the rights of the monastery, as well as its legal form and personality,” as Mr Greatritis said.

At the same time, he stressed that Greece’s relationship with Egypt is deep and developed strategic features and pointed out that Egypt’s intention is to proceed with the two sides based on the tradition and the already formed status of the monastery.

Specifically, the statement of the Greek Foreign Minister at ERT after meeting with his Egyptian counterpart is as follows:

“Our relationship with Egypt is deep and has developed strategic features.

We discussed today with the Egyptian Foreign Minister the issues related to the Monastery of St. Catherine of Mount Sinai. We have agreed immediately to work in the direction of securing the rights of the monastery, as well as its legal form and personality.

The intention of Egypt and Greece is to proceed on the basis of the centuries -long tradition and the already designed status of an emblematic monastery for its Greek -Orthodox worship character. “
