Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras underlined the need for a new patriotism against oligarchy and kleptocracy, speaking at the 2nd International Conference on Democracy and Social Justice, organized by the Alexis Tsipras Institute.

The former prime minister criticized the Mitsotakis government, who, he said, creates the society of one fifth, and underlined the responsibility of the progressive and leftist forces as a whole for shaping a new vision.

He noted the inability of the opposition to show an alternative and added that “there is no magic key to open the door of another Greece, we must find it or create it together. It takes a plan of aggravation and growth with a five -year horizon. It takes a new vision that will mobilize the world of work and creation. “

Mr Tsipras referred to international reality, making a comprehensive analysis of international things, of the “extreme authoritarian and neoliberal capitalism, which favors the rise of the international far -right,” he said. To add that is now required, a coordinated reaction of the left and progressive forces. Concerning international developments, he noted: “Today, we are at a crucial crossroads, not only for Europe, but at the global level. Because these forces and their ideas are unfortunately even more powerful. They are not only disseminated in society. They also take over the governance on both sides of the Atlantic. President Trump’s re -election does not merely affect global developments. It overturns the framework in which international relations were built after World War II and especially after the Cold War. It utilizes the weaknesses of the liberal international order. The tragic consequences of Western interventions in the Middle East and in Afghanistan or the failure of NATO’s policy in Ukraine. To impose ‘law of the powerful’ instead of international law, as a reference point of international relations.

He then gave the scourge a progressive agenda while highlighting a number of conditions. Alexis Tsipras specifically said:

  • – You need a new national plan of reconstruction and reconstruction, with a five -year horizon. With the aim of developing, durability, security and justice, institutions, democracy. With the aim of trusting and solidarity. It is needed is a new vision that will inspire and mobilize.
  • – We need a new vision and a new movement. A moral, social and political initiative that will run through all the progressive parties will touch those who have turned their backs on the political system, respond to far -right demagogy and motivate citizens to get up from the couch.
  • – A new social and political wave that will effectively unite color resistance movements, and with a compass the needs of the homeland, will give motivation, inspiration, alternative to tired citizens. A new patriotism, I dare say, against oligarchy and kleptocracy. On the one hand our homeland, on the other hand their wealth. This is the modern dividing line. Against policies and practices that exacerbate inequalities and unfair.
  • – The far -right, often in an alliance with conservative or neoliberal parties, proposes a model of authoritarian capitalism against democratic capitalism. A model that borrows policies and practices from the authoritarian regimes in the world that are enhanced. An extreme neoliberal capitalism. Continuous tax cuts to oligarchs and weight transfer without rotation, low and medium income, with cuts to the welfare state and high indirect taxation.
  • – Democracy and justice are also being tested in our homeland today. Because with its visible policies and its “invisible” practices, the government is building a society, which is reasonably and based on official elements and measurements, one can describe as a society of gaps. A society of one fifth, as I had the opportunity a few days ago to say.
  • – Because in our government the clergyman was taken to get Greece out of the crisis, and we were forced to adopt fiscal discipline policies. However, we have reduced the percentage of households below the poverty threshold. We received it at 21.4% in 2015 and delivered it to 17.9% in 2019. And we achieved great improvement in the economic inequality index. On the contrary, the Mitsotakis government, who found it all out, outside the memorandums and in economic relaxation, increased the rate of poverty from 17.9% to 19.6% in 2024. And at the same time paved the way for terribly surpluses in large businesses. The ten largest listed stock markets had a record of fifteen years last year, with $ 11.5 billion in total
  • – We must set as our central goal of strengthening the institutional counterbalances of democracy, preventing the risk of becoming states, public limited companies of those who rule and the oligarchs that support them.
  • – Replace the customer state with a development state, with strategic goals.
  • – We need to talk about a new moral, social and economic patriotism, to advocate the vision of the future.
  • Unlike its far -right and right allies. Or the center -right with its far -right allies, who are pretending to be fighting for employees but is basically there to support the billionaires.
  • As progressive forces we must be rebuilt, not only patriotism, but also the term “human security” from the far -right and the right, at a time that exploits him to intensify fear and insecurity and to secure votes.
  • – To emphasize the importance it has, both the protection of territorial and physics and financial security for our citizens.
  • – To promote an integrated European immigration policy based on respect for international law. That supports legal paths of immigration.
