The message that Greece is ready to offer humanitarian aid to Mariupolagain the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alexandros Papaioannou, during the regular briefing of the diplomatic authors.
He recalled the intention of Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, if conditions allow, to lead a humanitarian mission and said that the proposal is on the table, but no one is able to know when it will take place.
Also, Mr. Papaioannou made it clear that there must be appropriate conditions to allow the organization of this mission. As he explained, the appropriate conditions are on the one hand to facilitate the Ukrainian side and the Russian side not to create obstacles.
In the aftermath of yesterday’s communication of the Presidents Macron and Putin and the French presidency’s announcement that humanitarian aid is not possible at this stage, said that “we are still very far from this scenario” and noted that Greece is in contact with the International Committee of the Red Cross, which worldwide has the greatest experience of when there will be a window of opportunity.
He further said that there is coordination and contact points have been set between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Greece and France on the issue of humanitarian aid in Mariupol, which is an immediate priority for both countries. He reiterated that the main issue is the situation on the ground, which he described as tragic.
Regarding the possibility of the Foreign Minister’s visit to Kyiv, he clarified that during the communication between Nikos Dendias and his Ukrainian counterpart last week, Mr. Kouleba thanked him for his proposal for sending humanitarian aid, and stressed that the President V. Zelensky also thanked him that there is an open invitation to go to the Ukrainian capital. As for the time of Nikos Dendias’s visit to Kyiv, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said that there is currently nothing that could be announced.
