The announcement, late yesterday afternoon, that the meeting of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was locked up with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York, and will be held at noon at noon at noon. Greek -Turkish.

The prime minister had already stated on Wednesday that there was a willingness on both sides to take the meeting. But as long as there was nothing tangible for its determination, the possibility of not finally becoming a shadow that the climate between the two sides may have been more heavy than it is at first glance visible.

The meeting is important, even if, as they estimate diplomatic sources, there is not much room for a meaningful discussion on big issues. Finding in New York and not meeting would be a clear indication ‘Barometric Low’. Making the meeting, on the contrary, demonstrates the interest on both sides to maintain an elementally good climate, to maintain the feeling of ‘Calm waters’. Always with the expectation that the good climate can in a second year lead to more meaningful progress in Greek -Turkish relations.

The moves made in recent days on the part of Ankara disturbed this expectation and certainly limited the prospect of developing New York’s meeting to something very essential. The fact, however, that despite the Navtex issued by Ankara, the oceanographic “Piri Reis” did not come out open but remained in the port of Smyrna, is interpreted as an indication that there was no further escalation, which would undermine a new one.

From the Greek side to recently, it seemed to be a willingness to raise the issue of the work on the electric connection cable and it is not excluded, even at least, to make some reference. Of course, the situation is currently wandering around Cyprus, so the issue has been shifted to another sphere anyway.

Given that Athens -Ankara relations lately, for a number of reasons have been burdened, it is important that New York’s meeting to give a message that the channels between the two sides remain open and can effectively contribute to the tension.

There are no great expectations, no spectacular improvement in relationships is expected. The realization of Supreme Cooperation Councilwhich was scheduled to take place in Ankara at the beginning of the year and has since received successive postponements, precisely because on various occasions the climate between the two sides remained charged.

There is no visible corridor of substantial discharge right now, especially as the Turkish side appears with a series of moves insisting on reinforcing the role and presence of the Southeast Mediterranean. The latest development in this direction is the announcement yesterday that after 13 years of Turkey and Egypt they will carry out a joint naval exercise in the Eastern Mediterranean. A development that is definitely causing reflection, as Ankara’s attempt to re -order Cairo with a possible goal of disrupting Egypt’s close relationship with Greece.
