“We must also sing the anthem of Ukraine because at the moment it is the anthem of liberal democracy, the anthem of our rights, the anthem of our acquis. It is a war of values, we are fighting for liberal democracy at home and abroad. This is being played today “, said, among others, speaking at the 7th Delphi Economic Forum, the professor of Constitutional Law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and former vice president of the government, Evangelos Venizelos.
He reiterated that in the current context, only the United States can protect Europe. “Russia has reluctantly relied on its nuclear weapons. This needs to be stopped. “Europe does not have a nuclear arsenal, only the United States can offer an anti-nuclear umbrella,” he said, warning of the risk of US President Joe Biden losing control of US parliaments. “Can you imagine a coalition of forces with President Trump or his ideological successor?” he wondered.
Mr Venizelos blamed Russia for the war.
“Putin’s claim that NATO has expanded is not true, but the countries in question, which were former members of the Soviet Union, Christian Slavic tradition such as Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova are not members of NATO or the EU. “NATO promises to include Ukraine and Georgia have never been fulfilled.”
“To have a sense of size. Orthodoxy is the biggest challenge right now. Because today the Orthodox Church, with its weapons blessed by the Patriarch of Moscow, is attacking Orthodox Ukraine. “The only thoughtful geopolitical approach is the ecclesiological approach taken by Patriarch Bartholomew,” he said.
Mr Venizelos criticized the European stance and blamed Europe for being “submissive” to Russia.
“The West was submissive. “We are in a time that resembles the eve of World War II,” he said, referring to Winston Churchill’s saying that “the government had to choose between war and shame. “Choose shame, there will be war”, he underlined and added: “Our dilemma is to choose shame and war … There is a danger that we will be led to war ashamed”.
Referring to Greece’s stance, he noted that “the government has made a clear Western choice” and described the shipment of equipment as a symbolic act.
“Greece gained its place in the West with its blood and thanks to the representative system, leaders were found to serve this purpose”, he stressed while speaking for the Greek public opinion, he estimated that there is “deeper pro-Russian atavism”.
“Behind the Turkish-eating rhetoric is a pro-Putin mood, a pro-Putin subjugation,” he said.
Mr. Venizelos referred to the exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits and assessed that there should be an understanding between the parties.
“There has to be a serious discussion and a deeper understanding between the parties,” he said of the hydrocarbon deposits. “If the deposits are not exploited now, we can plant a flower and forget about it. “We need a serious discussion,” he said, noting that neither public opinion nor the political system is ready.
“The Zurich-London syndrome is haunting us because Konstantinos Karamanlis was severely criticized for these conditions”, concluded Mr. Venizelos.
