Switzerland has adopted the most recent round European Union sanctions to the detriment of Russia and Belarus over Moscow’s military attack on Ukraine, the government said today, keeping the neutral country on the same line as EU measures.
He also approved the imposition of sanctions on 200 other individuals and entities, including two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Switzerland’s sanctions list now fully reflects that of the EU,” it said in a statement.
The amendments will take effect at 19:00 Greek time.
The EU formally approved new sweeping sanctions against Russia on Friday (April 8th), including bans on imports of coal, wood, chemicals and all transactions with four Russian banks, including VTB.
Switzerland has deviated from the package only in terms of road and sea transport bans in the EU, which it says are not needed due to Switzerland’s geographical location.
The country said last week that it had so far frozen 7.5 billion Swiss francs in cash and assets under sanctions against the Russians.
Switzerland’s tiny neighbor, Liechtenstein, has also adopted EU sanctions and said last week that it had frozen about 260m Swiss francs linked to Russia.
Unlike other countries, Switzerland has not deported Russian diplomats in response to the civilian deaths in the Ukrainian city of Butsa.
