After Real Madrid won the Champions League, Thibaut Courtois’s board was knocked down at Atlético de Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper played an impressive game in the Champions League final on Saturday. With his important save, Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 1-0 at the Stade de France.
However, Courtois offended Atletico fans in a post-match interview when he mentioned losing to Real Madrid in the 2014 Champions League final.
I think I said yesterday at a press conference that Madrid would win if they reached the final. “I’m on the good side of history,” Kurtoa said.
Courtois has a blackboard outside the Atlético stadium because he is one of the players who has played at least 100 times for the club.
But on Monday, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo allowed fans to remove the board.
“If you want to remove the board from the curtain, take it out with an ax and a shovel,” he told Spanish radio station COPE.
And that is exactly what one of Atlético’s supporters did. Because now there is a hole where the Courtois boards are placed in the mythical alleys of the stadium.
Courtois spent three seasons at Atlético and helped them win LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Europa League while at the club.
For his part, Courtois also criticized the criticism of the British media after winning the Champions League.
“I saw a lot of tweets today saying I would be humble, but I think it was the other way around,” he said.
“Today I had to win the final of my career. For all the hard work. I don’t think I’m highly respected in the UK so I honor my name.”
