The England Women’s Euro 2022 campaign won the first round of the tournament, beating Austria 1-0.

Before a record attendance at Old Trafford, the Three Lions worked their way to victory by the stubborn Austrian side. And in the early stages of the game, both sides struggled to create meaningful chances.

However, in the 16th minute Beth Mead controlled a pass from Fran Kirby and then stole the ball from goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger, who lined up in time for the Austrian defense to clear. The equalizer was resolved because she crossed.

Then the match turned around, but England were frustrated and couldn’t waste their chance in the first half when Ellen White missed two excellent headers and Lauren Hump made a good save from close range.

In the second half, it was as if the host controlled the pace of the match but couldn’t improve the lead.

It was solid defensive work from Austria. Austria always looked dangerous, but in the final third they lacked creativity, with England goalkeeper Mary Earps barely challenging.

It wasn’t the most spectacular result, but it was a great victory that Salina Weegman’s side were able to build on for the next Group A match against Norway on Monday.
