Canadian swimmer Mary-Sophie Harvey, 22, said she was drugged during a party on the final day of World Swimming competitions in Budapest, Hungary, which ended on the 3rd.
Harvey posted on his social media account photos of bruises on his body and a text in which he exposes the situation. The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has opened an investigation into the incident.
In the publication, the swimmer says that she woke up the morning after the party “completely lost”, without remembering the last six hours, and accompanied by the doctor and the head of the Canadian team. “I heard from people fragments of what had happened and I was also judged. The only thing I can say is that I have never felt more ashamed.”
“Some of my friends later told me they had to carry me while I was unconscious,” the athlete wrote, claiming she had a rib sprain and a minor concussion, according to doctors who treated her.
“Unfortunately, this happens more than we realize. There have been an increasing number of such cases in recent years. Anyone reading this, please be careful. I thought I was safe, that it would never happen to me, especially being surrounded by friends,” he wrote. The last photo of the publication brings news of cases similar to what happened to her.
In a statement sent to Reuters and AFP, Fina said she was “deeply concerned” for the swimmer’s well-being and said she was in contact with the Canadian Swimming Federation and the Hungarian organizing committee.
“An independent agent has been appointed, which is investigating. Fina will provide updated information at the appropriate time”, says the entity, which recalled having approved measures in 2021 to protect swimmers.
In Budapest, Harvey won a bronze medal in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. She was also on the Canadian team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
