Lisca, after a troubled departure from Sport, is announced as Santos coach

by

Santos announced this Wednesday (20) the hiring of coach Luiz Carlos de Lorenzi, 49, known as Lisca. He resigned from Sport after only four games ahead of the Pernambuco club, with an estimated termination fine of R$400,000.

At Vila Belmiro, the coach from Rio Grande do Sul will replace Fabián Bustos. The Argentine was fired 12 days ago, shortly after the team’s elimination against Deportivo Táchira, from Venezuela, in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana.

The new coach arrives at the beach club in an environment of pressure, due to the bad phase of the season. The disembarkation is also troubled by the way in which the farewell of his previous association was given.

Hired by Sport on June 27, Lisca heard boos and “mercenary” screams during the goalless draw with Vila Nova, last Monday (18), in Ilha do Retiro, in a match valid for Serie B of the Brazilian Championship. . The information about the agreement with Santos had already leaked and reached the media in Recife.

Visibly embarrassed, the coach behaved much more restrained than usual on the edge of the field and was hit by a glass of beer thrown by fans. In the interview after the match, he denied the agreement with Santos.

“I’m Sport’s coach. I can’t confirm that I’m Santos’ coach. Ask who the news came from. There’s no statement from Santos, from my agent, from Sport. It’s not true. I haven’t talked to anyone from Santos. you [jornalistas] have to explain the news given in the middle of the game”, he justified.

A day later, he changed his tone and confirmed that he had talked to Santos leaders. “I told him about my desire to work there,” he told ESPN.

Upon his arrival, Lisca claimed to have “waited a lot” to train Sport. Former coach of rival Náutico, he tried to win the crowd by climbing the fence to celebrate the 2-0 victory over Londrina in the new home. At the time, he even made gestures bowing to the audience.

The gaucho earned the nickname Lisca Doido in 2012, during his time at Juventude. With a flashy personality at the edge of the lawn, he collects episodes such as heated encounters with fans and provocations to opponents.

Lately, he had been trying to move away from the nickname and show greater sobriety, in an attempt to show that his tactical knowledge should overcome his blatant attitudes. He also wanted to stop being seen as some sort of firefighter, called to bigger clubs only in moments of desperation, to give him a jolt of spirits.

A declared fan of Phil Jackson – a basketball coach who made history with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers by adopting “zen” concepts, nothing like the methods of Lisca Doido –, he formalized a partnership with influential businessman Jorge Machado two years ago.

His name was well approved by the Santos Management Committee, a group of directors that make decisions in a collegiate manner. He was suggested by newly hired chief executive Newton Drummond, who led the talks alongside president Andres Rueda.

Lisca likes to talk to journalists even in the most critical phases and focuses attention, something considered positive by the leaders at this time of crisis. He had already been considered to replace Cuca, in 2021. On the occasion, Ariel Holan was chosen, who lasted 12 games.

Changes in the technical command have been constant in Rueda’s administration, which, in a year and seven months, has already accounted for six coaches: Cuca, Ariel Holan, Fernando Diniz, Fábio Carille, Fabián Bustos and Lisca. With the exception of Cuca, none reached 40 matches.

In December of last year, in a meeting of the Deliberative Council, Rueda opened the club’s cash flow and showed details of labor agreements made with former coaches. In 2021, BRL 12.9 million was spent on Dorival Júnior, Enderson Moreira, Jesualdo Ferreira, Oswaldo de Oliveira, Levir Culpi, Jorge Sampaoli, Holan, Diniz and Cuca.

Now, Lisca hopes to do more lasting work than those of her predecessors. With the team already eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana and Copa do Brasil, he will only have the Brazilian ahead of him. Santos started the 18th round in tenth place, with 22 points, four above the relegation zone.
