Opinion – Sandro Macedo: Lisca is not crazy; PVC is no liar

by

Nicknamed Crazy, Lisca, Santos’ new coach, isn’t crazy at all. He’s not silly either. Watching from afar, he seems pretty smart, but he’s not always right.

On June 29, less than a month ago, Lisca took over Sport, in Serie B. “The will was very strong, on both sides”, he said when he arrived in Recife. “I hope to stay a long time, at least until the end of this year, and God willing I can stay and do a great job.”

God didn’t want it, but the saints (God’s partners) were watching. And, three weeks later, Lisca gave an interview as the new coach of the Vila Belmiro club. “It’s every coach’s dream, it’s a huge, giant club, and I’m very motivated.”

Lisca commanded Sport in four games, with one victory and three draws. Came undefeated. He has been called unethical by 11 out of 10 fans of the Pernambuco team. In fact, it’s not the nicest thing in the world to leave a team after 20 days, but there’s nothing wrong with it either. Fábio Carille was fired from Athletico-PR after 21 days. In other words, a stick that hits a coach hits a team.

The problem was how Lisca made the switch. First, journalist PVC (my column neighbor) found out from his sources at Santos that Lisca would be the club’s new coach. The post was posted on his blog during the first half of Sport x Vila Nova. At halftime, knowing the information, the Pernambuco fans began to antagonize the coach.

And here comes Lisca’s big mistake in the episode. Upon arriving at the press conference, the coach, visibly irritated, vehemently denied that he had any negotiations with Santos in progress and even insinuated that PVC had lied – which would make PVC one of the great visionaries of the year.

Lisca also said in the interview that this information created a bad situation with the stands (wow, who created the bad situation was the coach himself). “The crowd turned against me in the middle of the game. Today I was fired by the Sport crowd.” The story was an attempt to be fired by the club and get rid of the contractual fine. Didn’t stick.

In times of the transfer window, there are many journalists who actually spend the month “placing” or “selling” players in the big clubs. Rumors of transfers, signings and dismissals serve not only to gain clicks but sometimes to value contracts for certain athletes/coaches.

But PVC is not one of those journalists. He can be accused of other things, singing badly (is it?), sleeping with a statistics notebook under his pillow (is it?), but not spreading fake news. PVC’s only fault in the case is to be well-informed.

Instead of getting mad at the journalist, Lisca should try to find out (and probably won’t be able to find out) who leaked the information to Santos.

A recent survey carried out by Instituto Ipec in partnership with the newspaper O Globo proved what everyone knows: Flamengo (21.8%) and Corinthians (15.5%) have the biggest fans in Brazil. They are followed by São Paulo (8.2%) and Palmeiras (7.4%).

Further down is that the data are curious, with Inter (2.2%) with twice as much as Fluminense (1.1%); or Fortaleza (1.3%) much larger than local rival Ceará (0.8%). But then there’s the information that the margin of error is 2 points up or down. So, from Vasco (fifth, with 4.2%) to Santa Cruz (20th, with 0.6%), nobody can make fun of anyone in the elevator.
