Jurgen Klopp said Darwin Nunez responded “perfectly” to critics by scoring four goals in a pre-season clash with Liverpool’s RB Leipzig.

Nunez, who made an £85m transfer from Benfica earlier this month, has come under fire from some fans for his performance in Liverpool’s opening game against Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

The Uruguayan striker recovered his form at the Red Bull Arena on Thursday night and scored four goals after coming off the bench in a friendly against Leipzig.

“Pandora’s box was opened for Darwin, which was definitely the perfect night for him,” Klopp said after Liverpool won 5-0 in Germany.

“I always think that if you pay a lot of money, the players won’t feel any pressure, but they are completely ordinary people!

“And if the first touch isn’t perfect and players of this generation read about it on social media, it’s not really smart, but they do it.”

Nunez scored 34 goals in Benfica’s 41 games last season and was of interest to Manchester United before his transfer to Anfield fell through.
