Martin Ødegaard says that if manager Mikel Arteta decides to appoint him to the role, he will welcome Arsenal’s permanent captain.
The Spanish coach has pledged to name a new captain for the 2022-23 season because there has been no official club captain since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyan was stripped of his armband shortly before his trip to Barcelona.
Alexandre Lacazette unofficially took over as captain later in the season, but also left the club to join Lyon on a free transfer.
Odegor sports an armband before the season, is a favorite for a permanent spot, and is also the captain of the Norwegian international team.
Arteta has yet to make a decision, but the former Real Madrid playmaker has revealed he has a chance to jump the Arsenal captain.
Asked if Arteta wanted him to pick up his bracelet full-time, Odegor told reporters: “Honestly, I don’t think about it much. It’s not what I put my energy into.
Of course I do it if he wants me to, and I do it as much as I can. So we’ll see.
He continued on if it was what he would accept.
“I am the captain of my country and I enjoy it because it is a wonderful experience.
“I don’t know anything about the situation here. I think it’s a question for Miquel and the club, but if he asks me, of course I’ll be happy.”
When asked if he was proud to wear the captain’s armband before the season, he added:
“I think it’s good to do it for a big club, but I’m happy to be here and always trying to help the team.
“I moved a lot when I was young, but now I feel calm. I’m so happy here that I can’t improve.”
