Keelen Wilson believes that Judd Trump’s great success over the past four years may be due in part to the competition developed between the two players.
The Warriors and Aces are doing pretty well now, but Trump’s comments have caused some rifts between them.
At the 2018 Northern Ireland Open, Trump said: “Kielan is said to be the next rising star, but he is almost my age and there is no way he can win what I have won.
His personality and my personality conflict a bit. People are looking for future rivals, and I think the two of us probably will be.
Trump won the Belfast tournament, then the Masters, and defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final.
Wilson believes the friendship between them apparently helped Judd focus and saw him win the World Cup in 2019.
When asked about his relationship with Trump on the Talking Snooker podcast, Wilson said:
“I like it. I think another of his real successes came from behind. If you look closely, it came at the Northern Ireland Open, where he won.
He beat the Masters when he beat me in the first round. He played well in the tournament and comfortably beat Ronnie in the final. Doing it at Ronnie’s Ali Paris is quite an achievement.
Seeing that, I think it really helped him in his career. Before that, I felt like he had his number, and he had mine in the last season or two.
“I think it’s very good. It motivates me to train more, it makes me want to be better.
“I feel like he’s probably within a second of what he’s done the last two years. I think it’s good for the game, good for snooker and good for Standard.”
The rivalry remains, but after an exhibition trip to Germany in early 2020, the two are hostile.
Mr. Trump explains: I have an exhibition in Germany, so I don’t have needles anymore. We are not best friends. I will never be my best friend, but I will carry on. “
