Chelsea have confirmed Graham Potter as their new manager following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

Potter, 47, leaves Brighton to sign a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge after the Seagulls allowed Chelsea to negotiate with their manager.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is now out of Tottenham, was also being considered for the job.

Potter will play his first game as Blues boss in the West London derby against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Potter began building a stellar reputation away from English football when he took over as head coach in 2011, alongside Östersund, who were playing in the fourth tier of Swedish football.

In six years, he led the club to the Top League and the Europa League, with a win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in 2018.

After a championship season with Swansea, Potter joined Brighton in 2019 and oversaw the club’s impressive transformation, completely changing the style of play into an attacking and tactically flexible brand of football that has won over many fans.

Potter made Brighton 15 yearsmesixteenme In three seasons with the Seagulls, they finished ninth and fourth in the Premier League, winning four of their first six games.

Brighton is expected to receive around £16m in compensation for the deal to bring Potter to west London.

“I am extremely proud and excited to represent Chelsea FC, this great football club,” said Potter.

“We are very excited to partner with the new Chelsea ownership group and look forward to meeting and working with exciting players and developing a team and culture that our incredible fans will be proud of.”

I would also like to thank Brighton & Hove Albion for giving me this opportunity, especially Tony Bloom, and all the players, staff and supporters who have supported me during my time at the club.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boley said: “We are delighted to welcome Graham to Chelsea.

Not only is he extremely talented on the pitch, he also has the skills and ability to make Chelsea more successful off the pitch. He has had a huge impact at his previous clubs. We look forward to his positive impact at Chelsea. I look forward to working with him, his coaching staff and the team to reach their full potential in the months and years to come.

Tuchel, meanwhile, won the Champions League in his first five months at the club and is leaving Stamford Bridge after 20 months in charge.

The German was released by Chelsea on Wednesday morning after a disappointing start to the Champions League group stage against Dinamo Zagreb the night before.

His sacking came after he lost the confidence of the Chelsea team and the new ownership headed by American businessman Todd Ball, whose club was bought by a consortium in May.

The Blues have made a dominant start to the season despite spending £270m on new signings this summer.

Despite being just five points behind, Chelsea have won just three of their opening six games, losing to Leeds United and Southampton.
