“Bell” to Alonso and change of classification at the Austin Grand Prix

by

THE Fernando Alonso may have finished seventh in the Austin Grand Prix, however he will not get points. And that’s because after an appeal by Haas, he was punished with 30 second penalty and dropped to 15th place, which yielded changes in the final ranking: Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) moved up to seventh, Kevin Magnussen (Haas) eighth, Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri) ninth and Esteban Ocon (Alpine) tenth.

The Alpine Spaniard had a major collision with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, but was able to continue the race after repairs were made to his car.

However, his right mirror, which was clearly… “loose” after the crash, fell off in the final laps of the race. Haas told the marshals that Alonso’s car was unsafe and after reviewing the video he was given a 30-second time penalty.

It is recalled that the winner of the race was already world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull)with Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Sergio Perez (Red Bull), George Russell (Mercedes) and Lando Norris (McLaren) following.
