Agis Kynigopoulos died this morning, at the age of 89, after a rapid deterioration of his health, due to a car accident.
Agis Kynigopoulos stood out for his activities in the field of Sports. He was a player and coach of the basketball team of Iraklis Thessaloniki.
He was an international basketball referee from 1955-1960, serving as FIBA ​​commissioner from 1988 to 1995.
He was the leader of the National Basketball Team and founded the Association of Basketball Clubs of Thessaloniki, of which he presided for a decade (1975-1985). Around the same time he was also Vice President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (1980-1985).
He played a key role in the creation of the National Basketball Team and with his manipulations helped to solve bureaucratic problems for the internationalization of Nikos Galis.
He was a senior manager in sports clubs, professional and sports associations, and a municipal councilor of Thessaloniki. He worked as a sports writer in the print and electronic press. He started from the National Radio Foundation (NRF) and then collaborated with the newspapers “Eleftheros Typos”, “Macedonia”, “Hellenic North”, “Thessaloniki”.
