The Stop Homophobia association (stop homophobia, in English) and Pantone, a company that is a world reference in color systems and technologies for their accurate reproduction, launched the Colors of Love project for the Qatar World Cup . The country banned the use of the LGBTQIA+ flag, and this will be yet another form of protest.
Recently, former Qatar national team player and World Cup ambassador Khalid Salman called homosexuality “mental damage” in an interview with German TV. At the same time, Salman abruptly added that homosexuality is “haram”, a forbidden sin in Islam.
Pantone’s initiative suggests a way to circumvent the prohibitions, replacing the colors with the Pantone codes that refer to them, preventing the authorities from identifying people. “The biggest football competition in the world is approaching, and LGBT rights in some countries are being pushed back,” says the caption of the publication shared by Pantone.
Qatar has come under severe criticism for human rights violations. Captains of some national teams, for example, will protest by wearing rainbow-themed armbands during their games, such as England’s Harry Kane.
