Left-back José Gayà has been cut from the Spanish squad that will compete in the World Cup in Qatar. He suffered an ankle injury during training, according to an official statement released this Friday (18), and is one more on the list of players out of competition.
According to the Spanish federation, the 27-year-old suffered a low-grade lateral sprain in his right ankle while training in Amman, Jordan, on Wednesday (16), and will return to Spain.
Spain beat Jordan 3-1 in a friendly on Thursday (17), six days before they face Costa Rica in their World Cup opener. Luis Enrique’s team will also play against Germany and Japan in Group E.
Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde will replace Gayà in the squad. This is the 19-year-old’s first call-up to the senior squad.
