The Danish Football Federation says it is studying whether to disaffiliate from Fifa due to the ban on armbands in support of the LGBTQIA+ One Love cause at the World Cup.
Seven teams from the continent intended to use the armband as a form of protest against the way in which human rights are treated in Qatar, but had to back out after being threatened with FIFA sanctions, such as a yellow card for each captain who wore the belt. .
“We will have presidential elections in FIFA. There are 211 countries in FIFA and I understand that the current president has declarations of support from 207 countries”, said the president of the federation, Jesper Moller. “Denmark is not among those countries. Nor will it be.”
“It’s not a decision that’s been taken now. We’ve been clear about this for a long time. We’ve been discussing this in the Nordic region since August. I’ve thought about it again. I imagine there could be challenges if Denmark go it alone. But we’ll see if not. we can have a dialogue about these problems. I have to think about the question of how to restore confidence in FIFA. We must assess what happened and then we must create a strategy together with our Nordic colleagues”, he added, according to The Athletic newspaper.
Denmark drew 0-0 with Tunisia in their opening match at the World Cup.
