Argentines and Mexicans fight in the streets, on the subway and inside the stadium

With the decisive nature of the match between Argentina and Mexico in Group C of the World Cup, a tense atmosphere spread through the streets of Doha, in Qatar, among fans in the days leading up to the clash this Saturday (26), in Lusail, which ended with a 2-0 victory for Argentina.

Clashes were recorded at different points, such as subway stations. Scenes recorded by Mexican journalist Omar Niño show supporters from both countries during a widespread fight that took place on Thursday (24), at the exit of a station.

“After several insults and a pitched battle between a group of Mexicans and Argentines, the result was several people injured. And in the place there are no authorities, ambulances or support”, wrote the journalist on his social networks.

The scenes triggered an alert in the organizers of the Worlds. This Saturday, hours before the match, Fifa asked the Qatari government to reinforce security on the grounds of a “high risk” of confrontation between the fans.

On the red line of the Doha metro, the main access to the Lusail stadium, Argentines and Mexicans almost clashed on the way to the arena.

Initially, there were some provocations related to players, such as a song that calls Messi “cold-breasted”, an expression used for a team or athlete without determination.

The trigger for tensioning the climate would have been a mention of the Falklands War made by a group of Mexicans. To avoid a new generalized confrontation, however, the fans of Mexico went down a station before Lusail.

Once inside the stadium, the report from Sheet witnessed two Argentine fans being arrested, one of them with a bleeding face. A Mexican fan was taken away in handcuffs by the police.

The Argentines were in the majority in the arena, but the Mexicans also had a good presence.

Despite the tense atmosphere on the eve of the game, after the final whistle, the party prevailed around the Lusail stadium. Messi’s name was the most exalted by Argentines.

As requested by FIFA, there was a reinforcement of security guards circulating among the fans.
