Argentine newspapers credited Messi with all the laurels of the 2-0 victory over Mexico, in the second round of Group C of the World Cup, this Saturday (26).

During the first period, the opinion of the publications was full of negative adjectives. Loose, shallow, apathetic were some of the terms used to define the athletes’ performance on the field.

In the second half, the fear continued, until Messi hit a firecracker from outside the area, opening the scoring at the Lusail stadium. Minutes later, Enzo Fernández, with a beautiful shot, ended the game.

“Messi showed up when he needed it most,” said Clarín, one of Argentina’s main newspapers. At the end of the game, the report was that “Argentina changed face in time, celebrated with two great goals and achieved a decisive victory against Mexico”.

The second goal, scored by Fernández, brought relief. “Enzo Fernandez makes all of Argentina scream,” noted La Nación.

After the game, Olé, the country’s traditional sports newspaper, classified the Argentine victory as dramatic. “A triumph full of life and great goals”, it stamped on its website.

Later, the sportsman wrote: “Let’s go, Argentina! Messi, Enzo, two great goals and the dream continues”.

TyC Sports also praised the Argentine captain in his triumph in Qatar. “Messi’s great match against Mexico: the rallying cry and the great goal of Argentina’s triumph in the World Cup”.

In Spain, where Messi spent most of his career playing for Barcelona, sports newspapers also gave great prominence to the Argentine number 10.

“Messi planted a flower in the desert,” said Madrid’s Marca. Mundo Deportivo, from Barcelona, said that “Messi woke Argentina from a nightmare”.

Italy’s Gazzetta wrote that “Argentina is reborn under Messi and the round of 16 is possible”.
